The Director of the Genesis Lab Maker Space and the Academic Center for Excellence/Librarian for Emerging Technology and Digital Projects spearheads the selection and implementation of emerging technology for Pepperdine Libraries. Through directing the Genesis Lab Maker Space and the Academic Center for Excellence, this position is responsible for developing and executing projects and programs that make use of emerging technology in order to support teaching, learning, and research.
Duties
- Direct the Genesis Lab, a digital makerspace, including developing and implementing innovative projects utilizing emerging technology, including 3-D scanning and printing, VR and AR, and data visualization. Other duties include selecting and maintaining technology (hardware and software) to support lab activities, and supervising student workers.
- Direct the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), a cross-disciplinary, high impact learning space located in the Payson library. Responsibilities include overseeing equipment, software, and utilization of the space; developing and carrying out technology based workshops; and recruiting, training, and supervising student workers.
- Work with the Librarian for Digital Publishing, Curation, and Conversion to develop and implement digital projects that draw on the Libraries’ collections to serve students and faculty. Projects may include, for example, creating item level descriptive metadata, web archiving, and database customization.
- Plan, organize, and conduct trainings and workshops.
- Integrate the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) and Genesis Lab activities into mainstream library operations.
- Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications
Required: A master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school; sound knowledge of current and emerging trends, issues, and best practices in instructional technology, and a commitment to developing and applying this knowledge in support of student learning and scholarship; the ability to work collaboratively within the library and with external partners; excellent organizational, oral, and written communication skills. Sound knowledge of emerging technology trends across a wide variety of disciplines. Knowledge of best practices for digital preservation, digitization, born-digital archiving, and digital collections. Experience creating item level metadata for archival objects. Ability to communicate with a wide range of users. Ability and initiative to independently learn new hardware and software.
Preferred: Experience designing and delivering online training solutions and/or experience developing, deploying, and managing digital projects; hands-on knowledge regarding managing a makerspace; and demonstrated supervisory skills. Additionally, experience working with students of all backgrounds is highly desirable, as is a proficient understanding of the design thinking process. Knowledge of best practices for digital preservation, digitization, born-digital archiving, and digital collections. Understanding of database principles and XML. Ability to teach hardware and software programs to a wide variety of users. Knowledge of 3-D printing, VR and AR, data visualization, and 3D imaging.

Computing, Design & Fabrication teaches technical and creative design skills alongside collaborative practice. The curriculum of the department pursues four disciplines in depth: design thinking, mechanical engineering, computer science, and robotics; we seek opportunities for interdisciplinary overlap both within and across departments. We seek to provide both a breadth of possibilities to all students and a depth of study for our most advanced students. The new CD&F teacher will collaborate with the department to develop exciting, accessible, and deep curriculum within our core disciplines. They will also work with faculty in other departments to identify and develop opportunities for interdisciplinary learning. Gann’s state-of-the-art Prototyping, Fabrication, and Robotics Labs (makerspace) are resources for a wide range of students and learning across the school. Successful candidates for this position will be innovative thinkers with deep knowledge in multiple disciplines within CD&F, as well as interest in and commitment to creating meaningful, safe, challenging, educational experiences for high school students.
This is an in-person, full-time position starting in August 2021, and will report to the Director of STEAM. The salary range is between $55,000 and $75,000 annually, depending on experience.

Prototyping Studio Operations 40%
Manage and coordinate daily operations of the design thinking prototyping studio. Maintain organization of space and materials to ensure access for students, faculty and staff at the college. Test and implement new processes, techniques, and equipment for prototyping and making. Oversee equipment purchases, use, and maintenance. Order and stock materials and supplies for collaborative creative projects. Lead the hiring and supervision of student work-study interns including weekly meeting, 1:1 check-ins, training, and mentorship. Oversee training and safety protocols for studio use. Develop video and graphic communication material for equipment use, workshops and studio safety.
Maker and Design Thinking Workshops and Curricular Support 40%
Develop and curate learning materials to introduce students, faculty and staff to the equipment in the prototyping studio. Develop, propose and facilitate workshops on making for community members in partnership with student staff. Initiate creative projects that advance the mission of the Design Thinking Initiative and increase student engagement. Support and consult with faculty on design thinking processes and hands-on making components of their courses. Provide hands-on making workshops for these classes and work 1:1 with students on course projects. Guide special studies projects in open source design/build projects.
Building Community Partnerships and Collaborative Efforts 20%
Liaison between the Design Thinking Initiative and other complementary studios and labs at Smith, across the five college consortium, and within the broader Pioneer Valley. Serve as an active member of the college’s maker group meetings and coordinate Smith’s involvement in the annual traveling Pioneer Valley Maker Faire. Improve students’ access to making resources at Smith and in the community. Support the collaborative efforts of making spaces across campus including workshops, shop technician support, and coordinated logistics. Co-teach and coordinate interdisciplinary courses and initiatives, including the interdisciplinary 3D printing course and paper making studio pilot.

Familiarity with making in the context of an undergraduate, liberal arts context or a community-based makerspace. Demonstrated commitment to improving access, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree preferred. Design, design thinking or creative experience are strongly preferred.
Skills
Knowledge and demonstrated experience with fabrication studios and/or Makerspaces required. Desired proficiency with 3D printing, laser cutting, basic woodworking tools, metal work, familiarity with CNC routers, sewing (hand–industrial techniques), microcontrollers and electronics. Proficiency with associated software including Fusion360, the Adobe Suite, CorelDRAW and open source design softwares. Aptitude for troubleshooting and devising clever work-arounds for technical problems. Machine repair and maintenance. Experience working collaboratively with diverse constituencies, especially college students. Ability to multitask, pay consistent attention to detail, respond effectively to various work styles, communicate with faculty, students, staff, and community members and to exercise independent judgment. Princeton University Library (PUL) seeks a resourceful and collaborative individual to help launch our library makerspace in the role of Makerspace Specialist. The PUL Makerspace opened in the spring of 2021 in a newly renovated 2000 s.f. space that is easily visible and reachable from several parts of campus. Located on the A floor of Lewis Library next to the Engineering Library Circulation Desk, the PUL Makerspace is close to two related spaces – the StudioLab managed by the Council for Science and Technology (CST) and the Digital Learning Lab managed by the McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning.
Reporting to the Engineering Librarian, the Makerspace Specialist will develop programs and services to launch a new library makerspace as part of a renovation in Lewis Library and Fine Hall. The new space has opened with a small set of equipment that will grow over time. The space is open to the campus community. The Makerspace Specialist will play a key role in determining the program and services provided. In addition to collaborating with existing services such as support for GIS, statistical software and visualization software, the Makerspace Specialist will connect with subject specialists, library liaisons, peers across campus and at peer institutions.
This is a full-time two-year term position which will require some evening hours, with a flexible schedule to enable student-centered programs.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will:
• Provide consulting services for undergraduates, graduate students and faculty engaged in making in a variety of academic disciplines.
Maintain the makerspace equipment so that it is functional and safe, and manage inventory.
• Staff the makerspace including during some evening hours, and work a flexible schedule that enables student-centered programs.

Penn State is seeking to fill the newly created position of Makerspace Director. Reporting to the Director of The Office of Entrepreneurship and Commercialization (EOC), the Makerspace Director is responsible for complete oversight of Penn State’s makerspace. The newly hired director will be responsible for the planning, startup, and ongoing operations. This position will include some evening and weekend hours, limited travel, and supervisory responsibility.
Main Responsibilities:
• Manage and provide complete oversight for the makerspace, including administrative, operational, financial, and programmatic
• Determine appropriate staffing levels, lead the staff, with expected direct reports in operational and administrative roles
• Determine hours of operation, membership levels, rate structure
• Determine the appropriate equipment set and establish a maintenance program

Requirements:
• Master’s Degree plus 3+ years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

• Work experience supporting a makerspace or similar operation, ideally at an educational institution is preferred
• Experience designing, implementing, and overseeing training and safety systems
