Position Summary:
The Laboratory Specialist will assist in the development of educational prototyping facilities within the college and the university. The Specialist will run training sessions and assist in the development of training materials for students and faculty. Training will cover the use of general metal and wood working equipment, milling and turning equipment, and modern rapid prototyping equipment such as water jet, 3D printers, and laser cutters. For specific projects the specialist will work closely with students, faculty, and researchers to fabricate parts and prototypes. A key role of the position is education and supervision. The Specialist will work closely with additional support staff, faculty, and students to ensure that a safe, supervised, and educational environment is maintained in campus shops. Applicants must be proficient in the operation of manual machine tools and modern CNC equipment, modern metrology equipment, maintaining quality and safety standards, record keeping, and maintenance of equipment and supplies.

Essential Functions:
Assist in the development and planning of educational prototyping facilities; including equipment selection, facility layout, and safety standards and protocols. Assist in the development of training materials for equipment. Run safety-training sessions for students and faculty. Teach machining and prototyping classes to students and faculty. Supervise shop activities. Work closely with student groups to assist in planning of projects for competitions. Plan and execute machining by working closely with students and faculty on research and development projects. Plan and stock material inventory. Maintain safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations. Maintain equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs.

Prerequisite Qualifications:
Excellent communication and instruction, skills are required. A Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering technology or related field is required. Five years minimum experience, and demonstrated manufacturing work experience in the field is required. Can operate all basic machinery and measurement equipment, highly skilled in the operation of modern CNC equipment and a willingness to learn new equipment. Background in general metal work, welding, and basic electronics assembly, additive manufacturing (3D printing) a plus. Knowledge of modern CAD tools including but not limited to: MasterCAM, SolidWorks, ProE, and AutoCAD. Experience handling in the fabrication of an entire project from drawings to finished product. Preferred Qualifications:
Excellent interpersonal skills. A strong passion for working closely with students and faculty on challenging projects is highly desired. Certifications and tool and die making experience is a plus.
