Join a team of medical makers reinventing medical device design and fabrication in a hospital makerspace. As a Fabrication Fellow you will work with clinicians to lead the design, prototyping and community building efforts inside the hospital makerspace.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation of a hospital MakerHealth Space (hospital makerspace) and will be a key part of growing the MakerHealth and MakerNurse community
The Manager will ensure that all MakerHealth Space equipment functions safely at all times
The Manager will use their experience to help teach/train members of the MakerHealth Space on the various methods of prototyping and machine use
Training will be provided for operation and maintenance of laser cutter, 3D printer, and other machinery
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Maintain a creative, safe, clean, and fun work environment for members
Maintain all Makerspace materials, tools, and equipment
Maintain an inventory of material and communicate when new material is required
Execute laser cutting and 3D printing jobs
Act as a mentor to members in the design process of member prototypes
Train members on the use of the various machines
Teach both basic safety courses and advanced courses covering all of the MakerHealth Space equipment as well as develop new curriculum
MARGINAL OR PERIODIC JOB FUNCTIONS:
Host workshops to introduce and teach new technologies and fabrication techniques to members
Collaborate with hospital administrators/communications team to promote the Medical Makerspace within the hospital and externally
REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
Bachelors in a technical field or equivalent experience.
Excellent ability to diagnose problems, build and repair machines, make things, learn new skills, think critically, fail early and fast, etc.
Competency in safe construction, making, woodworking, electronics, and digital design concepts and processes and the ability to help others in both a formal setting and as casual advice
Demonstrated competency with 3D CAD software, preferably Solidworks and/or Autodesk Inventor
Working knowledge of 2D editing software such as Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, etc.
Strong technical troubleshooting skills and an ability to use multiple tools and skills when problem solving, both digital as well as conventional
Experience operating 3D printers, laser cutters and other desktop fabrication tools
Experience operating machinery such as drill press, bandsaw, hand tools, and associated materials
Dynamic self-starter with a positive, collaborative, and well organized work style
Experience prototyping with microcontrollers: Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc.
Excellent communication and customer service skills
Flexibility and willingness to learn new skills/information and take on new tasks
Proven ability to build prototyping competence in beginner Makerspace users
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/LOCATION OF POSITION:
Standard hospital, clinical, laboratory and/or office environments. MakerHealth Space environment and associated tools, machinery, and equipment. Physical demands of job include: ability to lift/move machines up to 50lbs. and ability to operate machinery/equipment listed above in a safe manner.
