Maker Training and Community Specialist

TRAINING AND COMMUNITY SPECIALIST, MIT Innovation Initiative (MITii), to aid the program director in conceiving, formulating, implementing, and improving elements of MIT’s makersystem.  This includes identification of new equipment and technologies, new making activities and programs, educational materials/techniques for classes and training, the design and management of MIT’s new and flagship makerspaces, and the formation and sustaining of maker communities.  The position will involve using extensive knowledge of safety, manual and CNC/digital fabrication equipment/technology, design, best making practices, and creative and innovative approaches. Will serve in a key role in Project Manus’ efforts to improve the student experience at MIT, including inside and outside of the classroom. Will also support Project Manus’ contributions to the nascent Higher Education Maker Consortium and the activities and programs of the Higher Education Makerspace Initiative.

Learning Technologist

Location: Liverpool, England
The position will be part of FACTLab, FACT’s transdisciplinary hub for practice-based research and innovation. The Learning Technologist will lead its Learning strand, focusing on the creative and critical use of technology, open source tools, and collaborative making. The position will operate within FACT’s artistic and research programmes to embed and develop a philosophy of learning-by-doing throughout the organisation working across multiple projects and audience groups.
The Learning Technologist will particularly contribute to FACT’s schools programme, engaging schools, teachers and students in creative use of digital tools and promoting an approach to education based on experimentation, innovation and enquiry. The position will also support FACT’s commitment to talent development, furthering the hands-on technological skills and knowledge of individuals and groups such as, creative professionals, residents, practitioners, graduate students, young people, communities, entrepreneurs, and staff.

Director of Innovation & Design

The Moses Brown School – 775 students N-12 in Providence, RI – is seeking a Director of Innovation & Design who will be the inaugural manager of a new, 5,000 sq. ft. maker space (the Y-Lab) and a leader in creating a school-wide program focused on innovation, design, and engineering.

 Moses Brown, a 232-year old Quaker day school, is deeply engaged in a cultural and capital campaign, actively accelerating its position as an innovative 21st century learning community.  This faculty position presents a unique opportunity for a highly creative professional to play a central role in shaping a new program, a new space, and the near-term future of one of the oldest independent schools in the country.

 An expert in maker pedagogy and the tools that support it, the Director of Innovation & Design is a teacher, coach, and mentor.  Reporting to the Director of STEM Education, s/he works with teachers on curriculum design and integration, looking for opportunities to bring a ‘hands-on, minds-on’ approach to all academic disciplines and grades.  The Director also teaches several courses per year such as Computer Science/Programming or Digital Design & Fabrication and organizes extra-curricular activities and summer camps such as Robotics or an Inventor’s Club.
The Director is an experienced craftsman, engineer, tinkerer, and inventor.  S/he has a curiosity for how things work and a flair for designing real-world student projects that foster experimentation and collaboration and demand rigorous application of skills and knowledge.  The Director is as comfortable with 3D scanners and CNC routers as s/he is with sewing machines and glue guns, and understands how to keep students safe and productive in a 21st century maker space.
While the exact job responsibilities and schedule will evolve together with the program and its physical space, the Director of Innovation & Design will:

  • Lead and collaborate with faculty in the design of new maker courses, projects, and units of study in all divisions;
  • Provide MB teachers with ongoing professional development that enhances instruction and technical skill development;
  • Manage all aspects of the Y-Lab maker space, including budgeting, supplies, maintenance, and safety protocols.

The ideal Director of Innovation & Design has a technical degree and/or similar career work experience.  S/he is proficient in (or eager to learn) the typical software and hardware of a school-based design studio, including CAD/CAM and/or Open Source Design software; programming languages such as Java, Python, Robot C (Arduino), or Scratch; and machines such as 3D scanners and printers, laser cutters, CNC routers and their associated tools and equipment.  Experience with VEX robotics is desirable.  Beyond these threshold capabilities, the Director must be a dynamic person with strong interpersonal skills, and above all a passionate and experienced teacher who loves working with children and inspiring their curiosity.

Intel, Nevada Partners, and Skybot have joined together to create a new program for clients who are interested in the advancement of forward-looking technologies, tools, and platforms. The program focuses on self-efficacy, project-based learning, and a program development plan and access to advanced technology the clients can bring their personal development plans to life increasing the clients’ competitiveness, employability and mindset. Clients have the opportunity to work with tools and equipment in the innovations lab to explore the application of science and technology with hand-on activities. The Intel Innovation Generation program is committed to helping clients develop the exploratory mindset needed for the jobs of tomorrow.

The Instructional Specialist will lead a group of 25 clients from Nevada Partners Youth Program, ages 18 – 24, through a curriculum intended to support the development of Science, Technology, Engineering, Entrepreneurship and Drone application and operations. The Intel Innovation Generation program runs 12 — 14 weeks, 4 days a week, and the theme or program may vary at the start of each new cycle.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Facilitates/coordinates a rigorous Science, Technology, and Drone Education curriculum with career-related instruction; assesses and provides for differentiation to assure student progress while managing the learning environment.

Employ a variety of instructional techniques, instructional media, coaching and performance assessments, which guide the learning process toward academic achievement and curriculum goals.

Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, curricular units, and projects and communicates these objectives to the students.

Teaches students to solve problems, think logically, creatively professionally, and work collaboratively.

Models enthusiasm for Science & Technology Education (STEM) and demonstrates current innovations in the industry, including competition within the global economy.

Integrating the use of innovation lab – hardware, software and Internet resources – in support of student learning and assist in meeting Nevada Partners standards for subject-area and technology-learning objectives.

Implements all policies and rules governing client life and conduct and develops and informs students of reasonable rules concerning classroom procedures and behavior and maintains a safe and orderly classroom environment.

Direct all training, lab work or classes regarding innovation lab use, coordinating instruction to meet technology proficiency goals.
